Winter requires extra care, especially for your hands and feet.
With a few simple steps, you can prevent dryness, discomfort, and more serious skin issues.
Shaily Mehrotra, CEO and Co-founder of Fixderma India Pvt Ltd, points out that it's easy to overlook the areas of our body most exposed to harsh winter conditions—our hands and feet. While we tend to focus on bundling up in warm jackets and sweaters, these parts of our body bear the brunt of the cold, yet they often get neglected.
It’s important to use a rich, nourishing moisturizer specifically designed for your hands and feet. Look for products with ingredients like shea butter, glycerin, or hyaluronic acid. Apply the moisturizer right after washing your hands or feet, or after showering, while your skin is still slightly damp. This helps lock in moisture and creates a protective barrier against the cold. Consider applying a thicker cream before bed to keep your skin hydrated overnight.
Warm socks and gloves are essential during the colder months. Don’t underestimate the importance of providing a physical barrier against the harsh cold. Opt for gloves made from soft, insulating materials that protect your hands while allowing flexibility. Thermal socks made from moisture-wicking fabrics will keep your feet warm and dry, preventing them from losing moisture. These items not only keep you warm but also help protect your skin from excessive dryness and irritation.
While it may be tempting to take long, hot showers during winter, hot water can remove your skin of its natural oils. Instead, use lukewarm water, which helps your skin retain moisture without causing dryness. Choose a gentle, hydrating body cleanser that will nourish your skin while you wash, and avoid harsh soaps that can further dehydrate your skin.
Exfoliating your hands and feet can help remove dead skin cells, allowing your moisturizers to deeper and work more effectively. However, it's important to exfoliate gently—over-scrubbing or using harsh exfoliants can damage your skin. Use a mild scrub once or twice a week to keep your skin smooth and soft without irritation.
Winter dryness can affect your skin from the outside, but hydration starts from within. Be sure to drink plenty of water throughout the day to keep your skin hydrated. Herbal teas are also a great option in the winter, as they help keep you warm while contributing to your overall hydration.
If you notice any cracks or calluses on your hands or feet, treat them as soon as possible to prevent further irritation. Use thick, medicated ointments or moisturizers designed to heal and repair dry, cracked skin. Wearing cotton gloves or socks overnight can also speed up the healing process by keeping the affected areas moisturized and protected while you sleep.
For added nourishment, consider applying a thick layer of moisturizer to your hands and feet before bed, and wear cotton gloves or socks to lock in the moisture overnight. This will allow the creams to work their magic while you sleep, leaving you with soft, hydrated skin by morning.
By incorporating these simple self-care practices into your routine, you can ensure that your hands and feet stay healthy, hydrated, and protected throughout the cold winter months!
